Reporting to the Controls Team Manager, the Sr Controls Engineer designs and develops programs for material handling equipment. This individual understands equipment and customer requirements that drive the design of the technical solutions. This role provides engineering services in all project phases, which include analysis, electrical design feedback, installation support, debugging and delegation of tasks as needed . Addresses required changes on site, and creates solutions to complete equipment installation as designed. Analyzes/understands/utilizes project requirements and develops sound solutions (PLC programming, controls devices/equipment)


  • Provides project leadership to other controls engineers working with the project manager and supporting on site activities in conjunction with our customers and implementers. 
  • Acts as a mentor to other controls engineers, advising and coaching those individuals to help grow their knowledge base.
  • Coordinate/manage relations between mechanical and electrical installers.
  • Acting as a liaison between Matthews and the customer as well as other integrators either on and off site. 
  • Interacts with both internal Matthews software teams and/or third party software groups to ensure that the overall customer solution is sound.
  • Participates with other lead control and lead software engineers to develop correct customer solutions.
  • Programs PLC code, HMI development and verification to support equipment operations. 
  • Guides others or performs I/O checkout and wiring verification.
  • Role will be travel based (75% of time) at customer sites across North America.
  • Employs technical knowledge to support our customer service group.
  • Additional duties as assigned. 


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • 6+ years previous engineering experience required. Experience in material handling/conveyor controls is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, as well as the ability to assess and respond to customer demands, often in an on site environment. 
  • Understanding of electrical designs and concepts, including networking, drives, PLC and I/O.  Familiarization with Rockwell PLC's is preferred.
  • High degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications. 
  • Strong analytical, prioritizing, problem-solving, presentation, and preparation and planning skills. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning). 
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as internal and external clients. 
  • Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a deadline-oriented environment. 
  • Ability to work with and influence peers and management. 
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting. 



  • Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; talk, hear and see.   
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
